There is something about Manchester United’s midfield that continuously sparks debate. There was the age old question mark over creativity in midfield that Jose Mourinho masterminded and left for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to pick up, which was firmly resolved by Bruno Fernandes.
Then Paul Pogba was quizzed over the disparity in his output for France and the Red Devils, with claims that he simply didn’t care enough about United to warrant a place in the side.
And now, the doubt has fallen upon United’s defensive midfield contingent, with Nemanja Matic, Fred and Scott McTominay all receiving pelters for their poor displays in the centre of the park.
United’s poor results of late have been a big factor for their scrutiny, but fans do have a point – United’s midfield are usually the architects of their own downfall.
Fred took flak for his performance against Everton at the weekend and United fans are at the end of their tether with just how easy it is to bypass United’s midfield – with many links for new signings forming as a result.

According to Gabby Agbonlahor, Fred tends to produce more poor performances than good ones – and there is one man from his beloved Aston Villa who he believes would walk straight into United’s side and be an adequate alternative to Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips in Scotland international John McGinn.
McGinn, 26, signed for Villa from Hibernian in the summer of 2018, and instantly became a fan favourite for his never-say-die attitude in the west Midlands.
Displaying a physical excellence, defensive awareness and quality on the ball, this isn’t the first time McGinn has been touted for a move away from the Villains with plenty of bigger clubs lurking for Premier League consistency.
Despite signing a new five-year-contract last summer, McGinn would likely find a move to one of the bigger clubs too hard to turn down with regular European football on the horizon.

And Agbonlahor believes he would be the perfect addition to the Manchester United midfield.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the former England striker branded Fred as ‘sloppy’, and believed plenty of others in the league would deserve a chance.
“I say it every time I see him play, McTominay is the better version of Fred, definitely,” Agbonlahor said.
“But every time Fred gets the ball he gives it away – sloppy passes when they’re trying to build attacks.

“He’ll kick it out out of a play or to the opposition and even when he’s in there to win the ball back, like Allan or Doucoure does, Fred doesn’t do that.
“I don’t see see why he’s in that Manchester United team. I’d rather [Jesse] Lingard all day or give [Donny] van de Beek a chance.
“There’s a lot of centre-midfielders that walk into that midfield.
“John McGinn walks into that midfield.”
