Man Utd, Tottenham and Chelsea have looming £272m blackhole to fill
Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea will all be busy over the next year with a host of valuable assets being out of contract, potentially losing them millions in the transfer window. It’s become more of a norm nowadays to see clubs willingly lose top stars as free agents as they struggle to bring in fees worth selling for.
Liverpool saw Naby Keita, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Roberto Firmino all leave as free agents this summer as they’re valuations were not met in previous windows. While Milner and Firmino were given an emotional farewell, there will be a part of the Liverpool ownership group who will surely be kicking themselves for not getting anything back from the £83million outlay for both Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Both midfielders are still under 30 and have a chance of playing at the top level elsewhere and still could have commanded a fee. It acts as a warning for Liverpool’s rivals, who all face a similar situation next year.
Arsenal have managed to avoid a potential headache by signing William Saliba up to a new long-term deal. But north London rivals Tottenham arguably have the biggest worry of all with Harry Kane showing no sign of putting pen to paper on an extension.
According to transfermarkt, Kane is valued at £78m alone but he’s not the only player who Tottenham risk losing for free. Davinson Sanchez, Ivan Perisic, Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier are also out of contract in 2024.
In total, Tottenham risk missing out on £114m in transfers judging from their valuation on transfermarkt. Chelsea are in a similar situation with Mason Mount the biggest name potentially leaving on a free.
Manchester United are pushing to sign the attacking midfielder this summer with the Blues hoping to cash in now and avoid him leaving for nothing, but they’ve so far rejected two bids. Chelsea have managed to offload both Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek on permanent deals this summer with both players out of contract next year.

But they still have Mount as well as Christian Pulisic, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Thiago Silva who could leave as free agents in 12 months. For United, their main focus is finally sorting out Marcus Rashford’s new deal and it looks as though a breakthrough is set to be made.
However, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Fred, Victor Lindelof, Anthony Martial, Brandon Williams, Alvaro Fernandez and Teden Mengi could still leave for nothing in 2024. The seven players are said to be worth around £80m which could blow a huge hole in the club’s budget if they were unable to recoup that in sales.
The total £272m potential blackhole that United, Tottenham and Chelsea face leaves them with some difficult decisions to make over the next 12 months. Some players will almost certainly leave as free agents with clubs unwilling to pay for their services.
But there are also several stars set to be out of contract who the clubs will want to agree new terms or that can fetch a fee in the market.
