Manchester United are reportedly in the market for a new right-back this summer, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to bring in some competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Atletico Madrid and England star Kieran Trippier has been heavily linked with a move Old Trafford, having first been on United’s radar back in January.

However, according to a report from Spanish outlet Marca, talk of a move to United ‘appears to be a tactic to earn a wage rise’ at Atletico.

The report states that Trippier is ‘more keen’ on a pay rise than he is a move away, but Atletico’s financial troubles mean that it is unlikely.

It is noted that United have ‘tested the waters’ with a €12m (£10m) bid which was rejected.

They also claimed that Atletico ‘will only sell Trippier’ if United match his release clause, which is currently €40m (£34m).

The 30-year-old is currently under contract with Atletico until 2023.

Meanwhile, United legend Rio Ferdinand has warned his former club against signing the full-back.

He told the Metro : “I don’t think they’d buy someone to come in and play [every week], I think whoever’s coming in there is going to be playing backup.

“They spent £50m on Wan-Bissaka, not to be a backup or No.2.

“He [Trippier] wouldn’t be my choice if I’m honest, but I see the qualities he has.

“But Trippier definitely wouldn’t be my choice in terms of the profile of player that I’d be bringing in to play as a No.2 right-back.”

Trippier is currently part of England’s Euro 2020 squad and he impressed at left-back in their 1-0 win over Croatia.

Despite having natural left-backs Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell in the squad, England boss Gareth Southgate opted for Trippier and he has since explained the reasoning behind his decision.

“We felt that his talking across the backline and his ability to get out and stop crosses quickly and his experience on a day like today – alongside Tyrone Mings, who is relatively early in his international career – would be a good stabilising element,” Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He is a very underrated player.

“People are still looking at the player from a few years ago and not at the one who is at Atletico Madrid and playing like a warrior in the last few seasons.

“He is a big part of what we’ve done over the last few years and he gave a really good performance.”
