Manchester United icon Patrice Evra has told his former club that they have four ways to replace Cristiano Ronaldo after their 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Fred got the goals as the Red Devils returned from the World Cup break with a win at Old Trafford, but have been looking to add more firepower to the squad.
After being gazumped to a deal for one of their targets Cody Gakpo by Liverpool, after Jurgen Klopp’s side agreed a potential £50m deal to sign the Netherlands’ World Cup star, United will have to turn their attention elsewhere and Evra has given them four options.
Martial started up front in what was dubbed his “last chance” at United, and after his substitution Rashford moved centrally, and the French forward is one of the options Evra named alongside a new signing, Alejandro Garnacho and an academy player.
“I’m confident in this team and actually also we’re talking a lot about Marcus Rashford, but Martial, this will be his last chance,” Evra told Amazon Prime Video Sport. “He’s had a few of those but now Cristiano Ronaldo is gone we need goals, he’s going to play as a number nine, and we need goals from Martial. Marcus Rashford is our best goalscorer and he’s only got four goals in the Premier League – it is not enough.
“We need to find a striker in this transfer window, or Martial can be the answer, or Garnacho. We could also try to play some kids. United is a big club, it’s a lot of pressure but I think some player will have to take the responsibility now.”
After missing out on Gakpo, two players linked with a move to Old Trafford have been Joao Felix and Memphis Depay, possibly on short-term loan deals. The Telegraph have claimed however that the terms of a deal for the Portugal forward may make a move difficult, as he would be an expensive loan without the guarantee of a purchase option.
Depay has been mooted with a return to the club after a failed stint at the club between 2015 and 2017, and if United are looking at a loan to cover their lack of bodies in forward areas then the Netherlands’ captain could tick a lot of boxes.
Barcelona may be keen to get his wages off the books and his link-up play from centre-forward could be to the benefit of the likes of Rashford and Antony.
Despite Evra’s suggestion that Garnacho has a chance of filling Ronaldo’s boots, he has predominantly played on the left, where he impacted the game once again in his cameo against Nottingham Forest.
