Manchester United have declared war on Cristiano Ronaldo and told him not to return to the club after the World Cup.

United bosses have taken legal advice and will attempt to sue Ronaldo for a breach of his £500,000-a-week contract.

Senior figures at Old Trafford have been left seething following Ronaldo's explosive and critical interview in which he criticised manager Erik ten Hag, owners the Glazers and how the club treated him following the death of his baby son in April.

The American billionaires have now decided to come down as hard as possible on the Portuguese superstar and want to have the remaining six months of his contract cancelled.

United believe Ronaldo has brought the club into disrepute and that they have a strong legal case against him. Ronaldo has also been fined two weeks wages of £1m – and ordered not to go back to the Carrington training complex.

Ten Hag has made it clear to his club bosses that Ronaldo will never play for the club again. And a United statement said: "Manchester United has this morning (Friday) initiated appropriate steps in response to Cristiano Ronaldo's recent media interview.

"We will not be making further comment until this process reaches its conclusion."

It is a stunning and shocking end to Ronaldo's United career and second spell with the club he rejoined from Juventus 15 months ago to huge fanfare.

Ronaldo touched down in Doha last night (Fri) with the Portugal squad ahead of the World Cup in Qatar and will be hoping his performances during the tournament persuade a leading club to offer him a move.
