Man Utd target is one of four players who may be ideal for new Liverpool tactics
Manchester United are expected to bolster their backline this summer with Jurrien Timber reportedly a top target for Erik ten Hag. But Liverpool are also in the market for a new central defender this summer, particularly following the success of Jurgen Klopp’s subtle change in formation towards the end of the season.
The change in system largely centred around Trent Alexander-Arnold pushing into midfield alongside Fabinho while Andy Robertson dropped alongside Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in a more central role. While Alexander-Arnold thrived in his new role, Robertson struggled to have a similar impact further back.
Joel Matip and Joe Gomez remain options for Klopp in the new system, but reports have indicated that Liverpool will look for another central defender to give him another option. That could put United and Liverpool up against one another in the transfer market with Timber not the only player who would arguably fit perfectly into Klopp’s system.
Express Sport takes a look at three other players linked with a move to Old Trafford who would also have an impact at Liverpool.
Josko Gvardiol
The Croatia international would be the dream signing at Liverpool as he fits perfectly into what Klopp needs. Liverpool will want to maintain their model of targeting young and highly-rated players and they don’t come much better than Gvardiol.
A left-sided centre-back is also what Klopp will likely be looking for to help potentially provide cover for Robertson in the new system. But the only issue for Liverpool would be the price needed to prise him away from RB Leipzig.
The German club are reportedly seeking an offer in excess of £85million for the centre-back, which could price Liverpool out of the equation.

Kim Min-Kae
Named as the best centre-back in Serie A this past season, Kim proved crucial in helping Napoli win their first league title since 1990. He only joined the Italian side from Fenerbahce 12 months ago for what is now considered a huge bargain at around £15m.
Kim is slightly more experienced than Gvardiol at 26 years of age, but he would be available for a much cheaper price due to a release clause in his contract. United are seen as the frontrunners for his signature, but Liverpool will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on his situation.
Axel Disasi RCB
The cheaper of all four options on this list but that doesn’t take away from the Frenchman’s talents. The Monaco defender is reportedly closing in on a move for Old Trafford with the French side hoping for a fee of around £35m.
Predominantly a right-sided centre-back, Disasi has earned rave reviews in France over the past few seasons. While he wouldn’t fit perfectly into what Liverpool need from a centre-back signing, Disasi’s talents would make him a hard signing to turn down if an opportunity presented itself.
