Manchester United chief Ed Woodward has texts and an email that substantiate his claim the European Super League wasn’t his idea, reports say. The 50-year-old is set to leave the club on February 1 after nine years as executive vice-chairman. And Richard Arnold will replace him as the club’s chief executive officer.

Back in April, the footballing world was rocked when it emerged United were one of the clubs who had tried to form a new European Super League.

While not the only culprits – Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Real Madrid and Barcelona were all involved as well – much anger was directed at Old Trafford.

It put the Glazers in the spotlight, with the Americans having to swerve questions put their way in the immediate aftermath.

Fans made their feelings known, even being able to get a match with Liverpool called off after supporters managed to breach stadium security.

Woodward resigned from his post when news of the European Super League broke, with some then believing he’d fallen on his own sword.

According to the Daily Mail, however, the 50-year-old has a different version of events.

Woodward claims he decided to resign on the previous Sunday having learned the plans for a new division were going ahead the night before.

He apparently turned to his wife and expressed his surprise, and shock, the scheme was set to be carried out.

Woodward has apparently already told United he couldn’t be involved in any decision to back the plan and insists he chose to resign before the Glazers scrapped the plan.

He knows not everybody will believe his version of events.

But Woodward is said to be ‘confident’ an email and messages on his phone would back up his claim.

Should they ever get out, it would likely mean more trouble for the Glazers.

They were able to hide, in part, behind Woodward who took much of the blame when the European Super League plot surfaced.

Yet if they were to be exposed, it would likely only increase the scrutiny that surrounds their running of the club.

While Woodward has got many things wrong throughout his time at United, there can be no condoning the abuse he and his family have received.

The publication states that his wife, Isabelle, has received death and rape threats due to her husband’s job.

And his young daughter was apparently once bundled over, while Woodward has regularly been hounded by fans during his nine-year stint.

Now, he’s set to walk away.

And Arnold will be his replacement, with the United chief now charged with the task of reawakening a sleeping giant.

Arnold said of taking on the new role: “I am honoured to have the chance to serve this great club and its fans.

“I am determined to return that honour in any way I can.”

And Joel Glazer said: “I would like to thank Ed for his tireless work on behalf of Manchester United during his nine years as Executive Vice-Chairman and 16 years with the club.

“We are now looking forward to Richard and his leadership team opening a new phase in the club’s evolution, with ambitious plans for investment in Old Trafford, the strengthening of our engagement with fans, and continued drive towards our most important objective – winning on the pitch.”

United’s first task will be improving on the pitch.

They’re next in action against Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup on Monday (7.55pm).
