Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop is reportedly set to leave the club on a permanent deal.

Bishop, 23, wasn’t sent off despite leaving Wrexham striker Paul Mullin hospitalised after he required oxygen following Bishop’s reckless challenge that left the striker with a punctured lung during a pre-season friendly game.

And it may be his last involvement as a United player with the former Southend United youngster looking set to leave Old Trafford without making a senior appearance

Bishop posted a heartfelt message to Mullin on social media apologising for the incident, writing: “Just wanted to share my sincerest apologies.

"A complete misjudgement and a genuine accident with 0 malicious intent at all! Wishing you (Mullin) the speediest recovery and hope to see you back scoring goals as soon as possible!”

But it appears that the Wrexham defeat may be his last in a United shirt, with The Northern Echo reporting that Sunderland are edging closer to securing a permanent transfer where he will compete with England U21 international Anthony Patterson.

How do you think Bishop will fare away form Man Utd? Let us know in the comments section.

Bishop gained Football League experience during the 2021/22 season on loan at League Two side Mansfield Town, playing every league game and starting their play-off final loss against Port Vale.

The youngster won’t be crossing paths with Wrexham next season unless they’re drawn in either the Carabao Cup or FA Cup.

But Bishop did receive support from former United stopper Ben Foster after the infamous Wrexham clash, who was in goal at the other end of the pitch, he said: “I feel so bad for Nathan, he’s absolutely heartbroken. I passed Paul’s number onto Nathan so he can get in touch with him but, yeah, he’s absolutely gutted. I feel for the lad.”

Wrexham owner Ryan Reynolds also privately reached out to Bishop to reportedly express his gratitude for the youngster’s apology to the Red Dragon’s talisman.

But not everyone was as understanding after Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson slammed the youngster for his misjudgement, furiously saying: "I’m fuming about it, I’ve got to be honest with you. It was a clumsy, reckless, challenge in a pre-season game and I’m not happy with it.

"I haven’t seen the goalie and he’s probably best steering clear of us for the time being because we’re not very happy."
