Man Utd star to demand transfer request in January after rejecting pay-cut offer
Jesse Lingard will push to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window after rejecting the club’s offer of a pay cut, according to reports.
The 28-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season which will enable him to leave Old Trafford as a free agent.
Lingard has been frustrated with his lack of playing time this season, having started just one game in all competitions so far.
According to The Times, United were keen to extend Lingard’s current contract but their initial offer was worth less than the midfielder’s current salary.
The report claims that Lingard’s representatives have also held talks with a club in Spain.
Meanwhile, MailOnline reports that Lingard is now aiming to leave United on a loan deal in January.
Lingard thrived at West Ham in the second half of last season after deciding to join David Moyes’ side on a temporary deal for the remainder of the campaign.
But since returning to United in the summer, Lingard has been given little opportunity to continue the form which saw him score nine goals in 16 appearances for the Hammers.
The Times reports that Lingard was given assurances by Solskjaer that he would be granted more minutes and was ‘perplexed’ by the decision from the United manager to start Dan James just days before his £25 million move to Leeds.
Speaking last month, Lingard conceded that his chances of making England’s World Cup squad next year were slim if he was not getting enough chances at United.
‘Obviously, the World Cup is a long way away but… you need regular football,’ said Lingard.
‘I was so close to going to the Euros and I think obviously it plays a huge part and it’s a big factor. If you’re playing over 20 or 25 games, of course you know you’re knocking on the door so I think it does play a big part in that.’
