Man Utd star replaces Chelsea's Thiago Silva as Brazil captain
Manchester United star Casemiro has been confirmed as Brazil’s new captain – replacing Chelsea’s Thiago Silva.
Chelsea news, exclusives and analysis
Casemiro joined United last summer and has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best players this season, with his midfield prowess vital to the success of Erik ten Hag’s side.
The former Real Madrid star has also been a key player for his country over the years, having made his senior Brazil debut back in 2011, earning 69 caps so far and winning the 2019 Copa America.
And now the 31-year-old will have the honour of taking on the most famous armbands in football history, even though Silva is yet to officially retire from international duty.
‘There are several ways of thinking,’ Casemiro said at a press conference upon the announcement.
‘We had Thiago Silva [as captain] in the World Cup but, on my part, I feel prepared. I prepared myself for this and I am thankful for the trust.
‘If it’s another captain, no problem because I know I am one of the leaders and I have complete freedom to speak as a captain before the group.
‘Tite had a philosophy, we had to respect it, but, regardless of the title, the leaders on the field, the most experienced players, everyone has the privilege and the right to speak with others or the referee. Respect on the pitch is earned.’
Centre-back Silva had skippered the Selecao for much of the last decade, though recently departed manager Tite tended to rotate the captaincy during his reign.
Many expected the 38-year-old to leave the national team following Qatar 2022 but while Silva says that that was his last World Cup, he hopes to stay involved with Brazil for a little while longer.
The Chelsea defender is not involved in the current squad however due to a knee injury, with many of Brazil’s main stars also omitted as interim boss Ramon Menezes looks to hand opportunities to uncapped players.
Brazil’s only match in this international break is a friendly against Morocco on Saturday night, where Casemiro will hope to play alongside United teammate Antony and Alex Telles, the latter of whom is on loan at Sevilla.
