Man Utd star McTominay may have just shown Ten Hag the answer to his concerns
Man Utd players' feelings towards Jadon Sancho after latest Erik ten Hag spat
Scott McTominay is showcasing that Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag could be making a mistake by not giving the midfielder more playing time after his exploits with Scotland on international duty. Steve Clarke’s side won 3-0 away to Cyprus on Friday evening to maintain their perfect record in Euro 2024 qualifying, with McTominay once again highlighting his ability to be a leading man.
Scotland have won all five of their matches in a group that contains both Spain and Norway, while McTominay’s six goals have seen him shot to the top of the goalscorer’s standings.
No player has hit the back of the net more times than the United man, with club team-mate Rasmus Hojlund and Romelu Lukaku level at the top of the standings.
Though McTominay has had limited opportunities at Old Trafford, on international duty he appears rejuvenated and playing with a freedom that must be giving Ten Hag second thoughts – having played just seven minutes of club football this season despite the Red Devils’ woes in midfield.

Mason Mount was brought in to play alongside Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, but they struggled to find the necessary balance in midfield before the former Chelsea star picked up an injury. However, Christian Eriksen was picked ahead of McTominay, who failed to seal a transfer away to United in the summer after interest from West Ham and Fulham.
In the blistering Cyprus heat, McTominay got the opening goal of the game after just six minutes when John McGinn flicked on Andy Robertson’s cross to the back post, where the talisman was waiting to bundle home with a header to send his country on their way to a comfortable victory.

McTominay has often provided steel and industry to the United midfield when necessary, perhaps harming his chances of featuring under Ten Hag as the Dutch boss appears to prefer that player in his system to be able to create chances for others, but the 26-year-old is sending a clear message that he should be involved more often.
Having been reduced to a fringe player under Ten Hag, McTominay will have seen his chances of featuring further hindered by the arrival of Sofyan Amrabat on transfer deadline day on an initial loan with the option to buy in what could end up becoming a £30million deal.
More reinforcements were necessary after Fred departed for Fenerbahce and the woes in the middle of the park, but the answer to Ten Hag’s concerns could be staring right at him if McTominay can replicate his international form in the Premier League for United this season.
