Manchester United captain Harry Maguire accepts the players must take responsibility for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being sacked. The Norwegian head coach took charge of his final game as United boss at the weekend as his side came undone against Premier League strugglers Watford.
With four goals conceded and very little to be positive about, Solskjaer was seen apologising to United fans before appearing to wave goodbye.
Just hours after the game and it was confirmed that Solskjaer would be leaving the Old Trafford hot seat.
Solskjaer has widely been praised for turning things around at United, putting them in a better position than when he took over.
But this season has proven to be a disaster so far with United losing five of their opening 12 league matches.
Solskjaer took the blame at the weekend, trying to take away some of the criticism from the players.
However, club captain Maguire insists the players know they’re at fault too for Solskjaer’s demise.
“The players need to take responsibility. We are in this together,” Maguire said.
“Ultimately the manager has paid the price, we are all so disappointed by that.
“We know we haven’t been good enough.
“We have spoken about that. The lads want to succeed.”
Michael Carrick now takes over as caretaker boss at United with a new boss set to be appointed until the end of the season.
The former England midfielder has held brief conversations with club officials on what he should expect going forward.
And Carrick is fully prepared to take charge of United for a period of time before an appointment is made.
“In terms of what I’ve been told my mindset is preparing for tomorrow, giving my best,” Carrick said.
“I know the club very well, been here an awful long time now. It’s the sacrifice and dedication you need whether that is one game, two, or a stretch longer.
“A big game for us in terms of group stages and I will go about my job exactly as I know.”
