Manchester United midfielder Fred has taken aim at Cristiano Ronaldo for storming down the tunnel during the Red Devils 2-0 win over Tottenham. The Portugal captain was overlooked by Erik ten Hag as the United boss made changes late on and did not hang around for the match to head, leaving the bench and reportedly the stadium before the final whistle.
Ronaldo had started United’s last two fixtures against Omonia in the Europa League and Newcastle in the Premier League but was dropped for the Tottenham clash, with Ten Hag selecting Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Antony as his front three.
The 37-year-old had hoped to get on towards the end of the match, but the Dutchman decided to leave him on the sidelines prompting an angry response from Ronaldo. He stormed off towards the tunnel and is said to have left the ground entirely before the final whistle blew.
He returned to United training this morning like he normally would however it remains to be seen what punishment Ten Hag decides to hand out to his troublesome frontman.
For his part, Ten Hag promised to deal with the issue after the match but insisted his focus was on the good performance of his side.
“He was there, I have seen him, but I didn’t speak with him,” he told Amazon Prime post-match. “I don’t pay attention to that, I will deal with that tomorrow. I want to keep the focus on the team.
“It was magnificent from all 11 players. I have to correct myself. It was also a performance by the substitutes who came on. Once again, it was a squad performance. I think what we have seen is 11 players who defend and 11 who attack. I was pleased.”
Ronaldo’s second spell at Old Trafford looks increasingly certain to end under a cloud with both his manager and his fellow team mates unhappy with his actions. It looks highly likely he will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, while a January transfer is also possible if a suitable bid is received for his services.
