Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has received a lucrative offer from Corinthians despite having agreed to join Barcelona ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports. The 34-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the season as things stand and is not expected to sign fresh terms at Old Trafford after playing a bit-part role over the course of the current campaign.

Cavani has registered eight appearances for United in all competitions this season, chipping in with just a single goal in the win over Tottenham back in October.

He played a significant role for the Red Devils throughout his debut campaign last time around, scoring on 10 occasions in the Premier League to help the club finish as runners-up.

However, the summer arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo has often forced Cavani to occupy a spot on the bench in recent months, while his injury struggles have also been causing plenty of issues as of late.

The Uruguayan forward has been out of action since the beginning of November with a tendon issue but is expected to be available for Monday’s game against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

He has been widely tipped to seek a new challenge at the end of the campaign, with Barcelona said to be interested in a move for his signature.

Cavani will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with the Catalan giants from next month and is said to be in advanced talks with the club’s hierarchy over the possibility of a summer switch.

The United striker has already given the all-clear to Barcelona and would be happy to join them, but could still decide to snub a move to the Nou Camp in favour of a return to South America, according to Sport.

The report claims that Cavani has received a ‘very important offer’ from Corinthians, who are eager to bring him to Brazil ahead of next year’s Copa Libertadores.

He has been promised an identical wage to his current salary at United, but it is said that he would prefer to stay in Europe and finalise a deal with Barcelona.

Cavani is still waiting for the La Liga heavyweights to figure out their priorities for the upcoming transfer window after striking an agreement with Manchester City to land Ferran Torres earlier this month.

They are said to be mulling over whether to follow through on their desire to sign Cavani, with Xavi also keen to make one or two additions in defence.

It remains to be seen whether he will be tempted by the offer of a lucrative salary from Corinthians if Barcelona continue to stall over the coming days.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal marksman Kevin Campbell recently insisted that Cavani’s services are no longer required at United and that a move away would be in his best interests.

“Ronaldo is the main man now so do they really need Cavani? Ralf Rangnick will want to change things a little bit,” Campbell told Football Insider.

“It’s important to remember the likes of [Mason] Greenwood has not got a lot of game time recently and he has not done anything wrong. He has hardly had a game of late, so the replacement is already there.

“Maybe Rangnick has told Cavani he will not get much game time this season and if that’s the case it’s right for him to move on.”
