Man Utd star Casemiro ‘played like he’s 45’ as Harry Maguire backed for recall

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro “looked like he was 45” during Saturday’s loss to Brighton. That is the brutal verdict of Gabriel Agbonlahor, who has savaged the Brazilian and tipped Harry Maguire to make a dramatic return to the Red Devils side.

United suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton, their third loss in five Premier League matches this season. The Seagulls were 3-0 ahead before Hannibal Mejbri’s goal gave the hosts a glimmer of hope.

Casemiro has taken criticism already this season and Saturday did him no favours. The Brazilian was taken off in the 64th minute, with Mejbri replacing him.

The five-time Champions League winner doesn’t turn 32 until next February. But former Aston Villa skipper Agbonlahor gave a scathing verdict of him on talkSPORT after the match.

He said: “Casemiro! Casemiro looked like he was 45 running around that midfield. He had to bring him off on the 65th minute for Hannibal, a young lad, because he was that bad.”

Former Tottenham star Jamie O’Hara agreed and suggested Casemiro gave up against Brighton. He said: “Casemiro looked like his legs were gone today and Man United fans can argue with me, give me whatever fitness stats they want.

“I am telling you now, three or four times in midfield today, he stopped running because it looked like his legs had gone. He gave up. It was like ‘I can’t catch him’. He looked so out of sorts.”

Agbonlahor also hit out at United’s centre-back pairing of Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof. He says Maguire would have received a barrage of abuse if he performed like Martinez did on Saturday.

The pundit believes it is time Erik ten Hag recalled Maguire, despite his much-publicised struggles. Agbonlahor added: “You know what else wound me up today? Let’s see the same energy for Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof.

“Martinez for the [Pascal] Gross goal, he has tried to make a block, he’s got fake-shot by Gross and scored in the back of the net. If that was Harry Maguire, you would not hear the end of it, ‘he’s terrible get him out the side’.

“Harry Maguire must be looking around that changing room now thinking, ‘How am I not getting a chance in this team?’. Martinez could not even play from the back, giving the ball away, Lindelof as well.

“Harry Maguire deserves to be in that team. So let’s see the same energy, all you tweeters, whoever you are, let’s see the same energy for Martinez at the back, for Casemiro, who can’t get around the pitch, not just pick on Harry Maguire.”
