Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been told to take up rugby by Joe Marler, after his penalty miss in the Premier League on Saturday against Aston Villa. Kortney Hause gave Villa the lead with just minutes to go in the game, but the hero almost turned villain when he gave away a penalty moments later.

Fans eagerly waited to see Cristiano Ronaldo step up to the mark, but Bruno Fernandes was in fact given the responsibility from the spot by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, Fernandes blasted his effort over the bar, much to the delight of Hause and boss Dean Smith.

Fernandes’ penalty resembled a conversion in rugby, which prompted England international rugby star Marler to suggest the Portguese star should give the sport a try.

“What about Bruno Fernandes wanting to take up rugby instead of football with that ridiculous penalty?,” Marler told talkSPORT Breakfast.

“It’s ludicrous mate! It’s still going, it’s still up there. How the hell has he put it that high above the bar? It’s crazy.

“I’m saying that because I’ve got a seven-year-old who absolutely loves Manchester United and I just wanted to bag ’em.”

Before the spot kick was taken, Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez could be seen insisting Ronaldo should step up to the mark.

Martinez was then spotted doing a celebratory dance in front of the Stretford End and Marler said he loved seeing such things from the Argentine.

“He did a bit of sledging before with saying Ronaldo should take it, I love that, I’ve got a lot of time for that,” said Marler.

“I don’t understand the people who say Bruno Fernandes has got a better penalty percentage than Ronaldo.

“Fernandes is at least a tenth of his age so he hasn’t taken nearly as many penalties, just let Ronaldo take it so he can go ‘ooohhhh [siiiuuuu].’”

The Villa goalkeeper’s recent escapade is not the first time he has resorted to mind games over a penalty.

The 29-year-old could be heard trash-talking during Argentina’s Copa America final shootout win over Colombia, in which Martinez saved no fewer than three penalties.

Because no fans were present inside the stadium, Martinez’s words could be heard on the TV coverage of the game in July.

“I’m sorry but I’m eating you up brother”, Martinez said just before Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez struck his penalty.

“You’re laughing but you’re nervous,” he told Everton defender Yerry Mina.
“You’re nervous. Hey, the ball is ahead of the penalty mark. Yeah, turn a blind eye. I already know you. I know where you’ll shoot and then save it. I’m eating you up, brother.”

United will want to quickly put their defeat behind them when they take on Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will then play host to Everton at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.
