Man Utd star Amad ‘punched’ by Luton fan as Sunderland crash out of play-offs
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews Wolves win
Manchester United loanee Amad looked to be punched in the back by a Luton Town fan during Tuesday’s Championship play-off semi-final second leg. Luton ended Sunderland’s promotion hopes with a 2-0 win at Kenilworth Road to move one step away from the Premier League.
Goals from Gabriel Osho and Tom Lockyer overturned a 2-1 deficit after the first leg at the Stadium of Light, in which Amad scored his 14th and final goal of the season.
The Hatters will face Middlesbrough or Coventry City for the chance to return to the English top flight for the first time since 1992 in Saturday’s Wembley Stadium final.
But their triumphant night against Sunderland has been slightly marred by disappointing footage posted on social media.
It seems to show Amad being hit on the back by a Luton fan as he attempted to collect the ball from the crowd for a throw-in.
The supporter in question then aggressively gestures at the 20-year-old forward, the target of boos all game as one of Tony Mowbray’s biggest threats.

Despite Sunderland’s play-off heartbreak, Amad is set to play Premier League football next season at United.
The Ivory Coast international has dazzled supporters with his exploits on Wearside this term, registering 14 goals and four assists in 42 appearances.
He hasn’t featured competitively for United since December 2021 before an underwhelming loan stint at Rangers and his season-long stay with the Black Cats.
But Erik ten Hag has made it clear that Amad has played his way into his plans, adding an extra dimension to his exciting attacking ranks.

Asked whether Amad was in his thinking ahead of pre-season, Ten Hag replied: “Yes, of course. We loan such players to let them develop and make progress. To bring them back… that is the aim of a loan.
“We are really strong on them on the matter of the way we mentor them, and so we follow them, and we have communication through all the season, especially [technical director] Darren Fletcher.
“He invests a lot in such processes, and the aim is to bring them back as a better player and with better experience.”
