Man Utd staff ‘split’ over Greenwood return as two things made clear

Attempted rape charge against Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood dropped

Manchester United staff are split over whether to bring Mason Greenwood back into the fold, according to reports. The England international hasn’t played for the club since January last year. However, with charges dropped against him back in February, he’s now free to play football again. The Red Devils are conducting an internal investigation as they ponder their options.

According to the Daily Mail, staff members at United are divided over whether Greenwood should play for the club again.

The England international has long been regarded as one of the brightest talents at Old Trafford, having been given his debut by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in 2019.

Workers in the ‘football department’ believe Greenwood should be brought into Erik ten Hag’s squad, with the 21-year-old yet to feature since the appointment of the Dutchman back in the summer.

Commercial executives are described as ‘more wary’, though, amid concerns over the ‘potential damage to the club’s reputation’.

It is a tricky one for United, especially given their desire for a proven goalscorer to be deployed at the tip of Ten Hag’s attack.

Man Utd takeover: Man Utd making plans for five players

Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen, of Tottenham and Napoli respectively, have emerged as potential transfer targets for the club ahead of the summer transfer window.

Yet Greenwood would save the club millions and, given his young age, has time on his side when it comes to having a successful career in football.

The report says the academy graduate has made two things clear to the club during recent discussions.

One is that he’s keen to resume training as quickly as possible, though United have responded by saying their own investigation will last until the end of the season at the earliest.

And Greenwood has also insisted that he is committed to remaining at the club, too.

His current contract runs until 2025 and the youngster currently pockets £70,000 a week over at Old Trafford.

United’s official website still isn’t selling any merchandise bearing the face, name or other image rights of Greenwood.

However, his No 11 shirt is yet to be reallocated.

Some were wondering whether Antony would inherit that jersey when he moved from Ajax back in the summer, having worn the same digits during his spell in Amsterdam.

That didn’t happen in the end, though, with the Brazil international taking on the No 21 instead.

Ten Hag has been coy when quizzed on Greenwood during the course of the season so far, saying: “No. Nothing. I can’t add nothing, I refer to the statement of the club.”

Last month, he added: “We are human beings and sometimes there are issues. We are not like robots, but we have to focus on our job.

“Sometimes you get issues, then as a club and team you have to deal with it.

“We have standards and values and we have to live along those high standards and values, and that gives a base if you have a good culture and spirit.”

Greenwood himself, meanwhile, thanked his family and friends for their support during the process.

“I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support,” he said.

“There will be no further comment at this time.”

Greenwood has bagged 35 goals for United during his career so far, with his last coming in a 3-0 victory over Brentford under Ralf Rangnick last season.
