A 2-0 loss at home to Manchester City was not their worst result of the season, although the performance was undeniably their worst in years.
Just one shot on target and 32 per cent possession against their Mancunian rivals consigned United fans to protest about Solskjaer’s position as manager.
Their 5-0 loss to Liverpool was unforgivable, and the City fixture added to his woes.
And their run of four points from a possible 24 in the league is considered as relegation form.
But Fabrizio Romano has stated that United chiefs remain adamant they want to continue with Solskjaer as manager for the foreseeable future with a view to addressing the situation over the summer.
United looked to have finally become title challengers for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson left at the start of the season with four wins from five.
The signings of Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane in the summer looked to propel the club to new levels of stardom.
But their horrendous form since then has left Solskjaer in an apparent lurch.
An exit from the Carabao Cup and only staying competitive in the Champions League with three late goals has thrown further caution to the wind.
And it appeared fans had enough after the 2-0 derby drubbing.
Solskjaer admitted his team were not good enough after the derby defeat.
“It’s very difficult to talk now, of course, because we started the game off badly, passive and when they get the first goal, it was always going to be a difficult game anyway, but being 1-0 down was hard,” Solskjaer said.
“David [De Gea] kept us in the game, some good stops and then they scored a goal they always score.

“[Joao] Cancelo cuts inside, cross [to the] back-stick that we know that’s going to happen and it shouldn’t happen. It’s disappointing, of course.
“We play against a good team, don’t forget that, but we were nowhere near what our standards and levels can be and that’s something we have to get back to.
“We’ve got to go back to being on the front foot, be more aggressive, maybe circumstances have made us a little bit more cautious and passive.”
