Man Utd set for £10m battle with Liverpool over MLS wonderkid forward Jhon Duran

Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign Liverpool target Jhon Duran.

The 18-year-old wonderkid has been lighting up the MLS for Chicago Fire this year, finishing the 2022 season with eight goals and three assists in 27 league appearances. That form had already attracted the attention of Anfield chiefs.

And now there's interest from Old Trafford too, according to The Sun. They claim Erik ten Hag's associates have made contact with Chicago, weeks after Liverpool made similar enquiries.

Duran's agent and family are said to have travelled to England recently to hold talks with teams in the Premier League and over in Spain, with Chelsea also mentioned.

His Chicago contract runs until the end of 2024 having only signed from Envigado in January, with a £10million fee touted as a ballpark figure any potential suitor would have to stump up.

Ten Hag is in need of a successor to Cristiano Ronaldo and Duran, who has been playing as a lone centre forward, fits the bill. Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, could do with attacking reinforcements in the near future, with Roberto Firmino's contract expiring next summer.

Colombia international Duran, who has two senior caps to his name, started out in his home country with Envigado before Chicago agreed a deal in January 2021 to bring him to America the following year.

He broke his way into the starting XI after netting his first goal against Cincinnati in May and went on to score three braces against Toronto, Inter Miami and Cincinnati again, as well as another goal against Charlotte.

The 6ft 1 attacker also earned himself a call up to his national team, making his debut against Guatemala in September when he replaced former United striker Radamel Falcao as a half-time substitute.
