Manchester United need to make a “statement” signing like Harry Kane this summer to return to the big table of European football, according to former Chelsea and Scotland midfielder Craig Burley. Kane wants to leave Tottenham at the end of this season and United are one of three clubs, along with Manchester City and Chelsea, to have made contact with the player’s representatives.

United have not won the Premier League since the retirement of legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

The Red Devils have also often not qualified for the Champions League and have not reached the final of Europe’s elite club competition since 2011.

Burley believes it is time United made a stellar signing such as Kane in an attempt to end the years of failure for a club of their magnitude.

The Scot reckons they need a player like Kane more than any other team in England.

“The club who can have him in England that are in desperation, who really need to sign him, is Manchester United,” Burley told ESPN FC.

“Manchester United have been playing, not second-fiddle, but third-fiddle at best for quite a bit of time now.

“Yes they’ve won the Europa League [in 2017] and yes they’re in the final again, but they’re not sitting at the big table.

“They’re going to finish second this year but others have faltered.

“They’ve been nowhere near the title race for four or five months now.

“This is a club that’s always gone out and prided itself on signing the best players, going out there and usurping the other clubs.

“They cannot afford, in my opinion, to sit back and watch City and Liverpool strengthen again.

“Liverpool will be back next year, make no bones about it. They will be back. And City are not going away.

“So Manchester United, if it’s not Harry Kane, it has to be others.”

United are currently 12 points behind newly-crowned champions Manchester City with one game of the season remaining.

Burley says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad is clearly not good enough to win the title and therefore claims a signing the size of Kane is a necessity.

“They need to go out and they need to make a statement,” he added.

“They’ve got a decent squad but they’ve already shown they’ve not got a squad good enough to win this Premier League.

“United are the club most desperate to get a player of Kane’s ability in the door.

“Let’s see whether they have the ability to pull that off.”
