Man Utd sent bleak warning over Amad from Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray
Manchester United will be concerned following comments Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has made about loan star Amad. The Black Cats manager has claimed the youngster’s body “has almost shut down”.
Amad joined Sunderland on a season-long loan last summer. It is his first full season in senior football as a regular starter.
The 20-year-old has eight goals to his name in 31 appearances so far this term. He was absent for the weekend’s win over Norwich and will miss the midweek match against Sheffield United due to a hamstring issue.
But Mowbray has thrown a question mark over the player’s fitness in a comment that will alarm United boss Erik ten Hag. Mowbray says Amad needs a break following the rigours of the season, having started 23 of his 31 outings.
He told Sunderland’s media team: “I think 30-odd games from never having a run of three games on the bounce has proved his body has almost shut down. His hamstrings are really sore and tight.

“There is no tear and there is no damage. He is just in a place where we need to give him a break and check him out of the equation for a week at the most and then he will finish the season strong, I am sure.”
Mowbray believes Amad will be back available again on Saturday when Luton visit the Stadium of Light. He added: “I had a good chat with Amad yesterday and Wednesday might be too soon for him. I am not sure, but he will definitely be available next weekend.”
United will have been impressed with Amad’s development during his loan spell. But comments regarding fatigue will be a warning to his parent club.
The Red Devils signed Amad from Italian side Atalanta in January 2021. He has made nine appearances for the first team, scoring one goal.

Amad also had a loan spell at Rangers in the second half of last season. But it has been at Sunderland where he has thrived the most.
There were rumours of a potential recall by United in January due to a lack of attacking options available to Ten Hag. But the Dutchman insisted the right decision was to allow the player to develop in the Championship.
He said: “We consider everything but I have a little bit of reservation about [recalling Amad] because I don’t want to stop the process. He has made really good progress there so I’m happy with that.
“But young players need experiences and when we decide for him to come back, he has to be a player who can compete for the starting XI or minimum to come on for a lot of games and make an impact.”
