Manchester United dispatched a scout to watch Benfica take on PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, according to reports. The Red Devils have already signed three players since the beginning of the summer window, but at least one more arrival could be on the cards ahead of this month’s transfer deadline.
Raphael Varane became United’s newest recruit on Saturday, joining Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton at Old Trafford.
The club parted ways with around £110million to land the trio and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently admitted that he is pleased with the strength of his current squad.
However, the possibility of United making a late return to the market should not be ruled out.
The Red Devils are reportedly keen to sign a new central midfielder, with the likes of Eduardo Camavinga and Leon Goretzka being linked with the club in recent months.
Meanwhile, it has been suggested that United could also be on the hunt for a striker, but Edinson Cavani’s decision to pen a one-year contract extension means they should be covered at the top of the pitch for now.

The 20-time Premier League champions still appear to be considering their options as they weigh up a fourth summer signing, with club scouts keeping a close eye on developments across Europe.
A United official was spotted watching Benfica entertain PSV at the Estadio da Luz on Wednesday evening, according to A Bola.
The Champions League play-off clash resulted in a narrow home win, with Rafa Silva and Julian Weigl finding the net for Benfica to seal a 2-1 first-leg victory.
Cody Gakpo halved PSV’s deficit with a goal early in the second half, but the Dutch heavyweights were unable to capitalise on their positive momentum and will go into next week’s decider on the back foot as a result.
United have been following the progress of Portugal’s biggest clubs for some time, with their presence at Wednesday’s match serving as evidence of the attention given to Benfica alongside Porto and Sporting.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes were both signed from the latter, while the likes of Nani, Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof have also made the switch from the Primera Liga to the Premier League with United.
It remains to be seen who exactly the Red Devils were tracking on Wednesday, with a number of players from both sides enjoying strong performances.
Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos put in a real shift between the sticks to keep PSV at bay during the second half.
Meanwhile, Gakpo stood out for the visitors alongside winger Noni Madueke, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham in recent weeks having only left the club’s academy setup in 2018.
With less than a fortnight to go until the summer transfer window draws to a close, United will need to act quickly if they are to pursue another signing to bolster their ranks for the season ahead.
Solskjaer admitted last week that although he is happy with the players at his disposal, there could still be further movement in the market before the end of the month.
“You never know what’s going to happen in football,” the United boss told Sky Sports.
“Of course we’ve still got one hopefully coming in [Varane] and any surprises, anything can happen. We’ve got to be ready. But I’m very happy with what we’ve done so far.”
