Manchester United sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could have a detrimental effect on their attempts to sign Erling Haaland. In fact, it could even lead to Manchester City landing the Borussia Dortmund star.
United are desperate to sign Haaland in the summer after missing out on the forward in January 2020.
On that occasion, the Norway international moved from RB Salzburg to Borussia Dortmund – snubbing the Red Devils along the way.
The 21-year-old has proved to be one of the best strikers in the world despite his age and already has 70 goals in 69 matches for the Bundesliga outfit.
But a release clause is reported to come into effect in the summer worth around £68m.
United are still interested in the Leeds-born ace but face a battle to sign him in the summer.
Among the clubs interested include Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona but the former might get a headstart depending on what happens at United HQ.
One of the main reasons the Red Devils are still in for Haaland is Solskjaer.
The coach knows him well from their time together at Molde, where he broke out as a blooming star before joining RB Salzburg in 2019.
Solskjaer is close pals with his father, Alf-Inge, another Norwegian to grace the Premier League and has admitted he remains in contact with the Haaland family.
And the striker himself as revealed just how important the United boss has been for his career.
“He [Solskjaer] has had a huge impact on my life, both as a person and as a trainer,” Haaland told TV2 in September 2019.
“He won the Champions League and was an incredibly good player. He has taught me a lot.”
However, United are on the brink of sacking Solskjaer after a string of poor results including the recent 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday at Old Trafford.
Another poor result could spell the end for the 48-year-old, with Tottenham, City and Chelsea all to come soon.
Antonio Conte has been tipped to take over while the likes of Brendan Rodgers and Mauricio Pochettino have also been linked.
But sacking Solskjaer could cut the cord that connects United to Haaland – and hand a massive advantage to their local rivals.
City might already be considered the favourites due to his father’s time at the club while Pep Guardiola is also in the market for a striker having missed out on Harry Kane in the summer.
United’s faint hopes of signing the Dortmund ace are largely down to Solskjaer but at what point do the Old Trafford chiefs wield the axe?
After five defeats in nine games and one clean sheet in 21 matches, it is clear that time is running out for the Red Devils coach.
But sacking the manager could come with major consequences and handing Haaland to City on a plate would haunt them for years to come.
