Manchester United have reportedly made a final decision late on Saturday night to dismiss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Red Devils suffered another humiliating defeat at the hands of Watford this weekend.
There was some optimism that the game at Vicarage Road would be a chance for Solskjaer’s side to get back on track.
The international break was a chance for Solskjaer to step away from the limelight and hone in on his practice on the training ground.
Most of his first-team squad were away on international duty, but there was still ample time to prepare for the game against Premier League strugglers Watford.
United headed into the game as heavy favourites, but there was also a cloud of uncertainty on how the players will cope with the mounting pressure.
Those questions were answered inside the opening 45 minutes as United found themselves head into the break 2-0 down.
If not for David de Gea, the scoreline could have been even more embarrassing for Solskjaer.
Donny van de Beek halved the deficit soon after the restart, but Harry Maguire’s second yellow card of the match all but ended any hopes of a comeback.
And United capitulated in stoppage time as Watford struck twice to record an impresive 4-1.
The defeat appears to have been the final nail in the coffin for Solskjaer with the Glazers holding an emergency meeting soon after the match.
According to The Times, the Glazers initially held a virtual board meeting during the second half.
Talks continued into the night on Solskjaer’s future, but a decision has now been made that Solskjaer will be sacked.
Joel Glazer has reportedly instructed group managing director, Richard Arnold, to negotiate Solskjaer’s departure.
The report goes on to state that Zinedine Zidane is the club’s first choice to replace Solskjaer.
The Glazers are also said to have pushed club officials to increase their offer to entice the Frenchman to take over.
Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag and Brendan Rodgers are named as alternative options.
