Manchester United are risking a player revolt after it emerged that Jadon Sancho will become one of the club’s biggest earners if he joins this summer. The 21-year-old is expected to complete a move from Borussia Dortmund during the transfer window, but his wages could become an issue.
It is understood that United are willing to offer Sancho an eye-watering £275,000-a-week deal if Dortmund agree to sell the England international this summer.
And that would make the youngster the third-highest earner at the club, behind only David de Gea and Paul Pogba.
Sancho enjoyed a sensational season once again for Dortmund, bagging 16 goals in all competitions to go alongside his hatful of assists.
But while the youngster has bags of potential, he is still not absolutely top tier, and having him on such a generous package could risk upsetting key players such as Bruno Fernandes.
The Portugal star is rumoured to be set to sign a new contract at Old Trafford this summer, but the Manchester Evening News report that even his new terms wouldn’t come close to matching Sancho’s proposed wage.
Several other first-team players could also be unimpressed by the imbalance, and there is a danger that United could be heading for a repeat of the Alexis Sanchez saga.
Last summer it was reported that Sanchez had still be earning more than any other United player, despite being out on loan at Inter Milan.
And that was said to have caused resentment at Old Trafford, particularly amongst the star players such as Pogba and Anthony Martial.
The Chile international joined Inter permanently a year ago to end that particular financial headache for United. But Sancho’s terms could reopen old wounds.
There is scope for wages to be increased across the board however, with club owner Joel Glazer stating that there is room for further investment.
“Our goal is to win every competition we compete in, and we will continue to invest in our Academy and in the transfer market to support the manager in an effort to meet the club’s goals,” he said.
“It [debt and dividend payments] has never stood in the way of us pursuing players or transfers on the pitch.
“We may have walked away from transfers at times because the other side wanted an outlandish number. And while it’s easy to pay it that one time, it does have consequences.
“You do it once and the next person expects it, and then the next person expects it. And that’s not good, ultimately, for the club. So, we think that we’re able to accomplish all these things and still have.
“We’re going to keep investing on the pitch, which we did last year, and we plan on doing it meaningfully this year. So, we feel that we’re in a good spot.”
If Sancho does join United this summer then he will likely be fresh, having played no minutes for England at Euro 2020 so far.
The forward was on the bench despite his team’s lack of attacking threat during Friday evening’s goalless draw with Scotland.
But the England coach has explained his reasoning for not using the 21-year-old.
“We’ve got some explosive options and a lot of them are young players and experiencing a big tournament for the first time,” Southgate said.
“So as a coaching staff we are realistic about our expectations of them as individuals.
“Jadon is in that mix. He’s trained well the last few days and of course we have got those options and those decisions to make.”
