Manchester United are at risk of creating another Anthony Martial mess after being handed a possible Barcelona transfer option. Martial moved to Old Trafford seven years ago, but has failed to show why the Red Devils paid Monaco a fee of £58million for him.

The Frenchman’s future at United is increasingly uncertain, with interim boss Ralf Rangnick yet to play him.

In fact, Martial’s last minutes came during a brief cameo in the win over Arsenal, which was Michael Carrick’s final game as caretaker.

Though he was named on the bench for Wednesday’s trip to Brentford, Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Nemanja Matic all came on ahead of him.

United are now understood to be attempting to move him on in this month’s transfer window, though their high asking price is so far blocking any exit.

Martial’s move to United has become a mess, especially considering he was the world’s most expensive teenager when he signed.

But as soon as they have decided to clear the Martial mess by moving him on, the Red Devils are at risk of creating another one.

That is because United are understood to be one of the clubs who are interested in a move for Ousmane Dembele.

The winger has refused to sign a new contract with Barcelona and as a result the La Liga giants will try to sell him this month.

“It seems obvious to us that the player does not want to continue at Barcelona and therefore is not committed to Barca’s future project,” director of football Mateu Alemany said.

“In this scenario, he and his agents have been told that he must leave immediately, because we want players committed to this project, and therefore we expect a transfer before January 31.”

United are one of the teams who are expected to at least explore a move for the Frenchman, whose time in Catalonia has been nothing short of a disaster.

Dembele joined Barca in 2017 for a staggering £135m, but has spent the majority of his time since then in the treatment room.

He has only managed 129 appearances since he arrived and has made just six starts in all competitions this season.

If the Red Devils did bring Dembele to Manchester, all signs point to him being a flop in the form of Martial.

Despite his reputation, Dembele has never impressed, with his most creative season being 2018/2019 when he scored 14 goals.

Just as they appear to be finally clearing up one mess from their past in Martial, United have put themselves at risk of creating another one.

They should then avoid the temptation to sign Dembele, despite his likely cut-price fee as Barca look to at least make some money back on the flop.
