Man Utd receive ‘new transfer approach’ for Mason Greenwood as talks begin
Manchester United have reportedly received a new approach for Mason Greenwood. Turkish side Besiktas are claimed to have begun talks over a possible deal for the forward.
United announced last week that Greenwood would be leaving Old Trafford. The club completed its internal investigation following allegations made against the 21-year-old in early 2022.
A mutual agreement was reached that it would be best for all parties if he continued his career elsewhere. Opportunities have been few and far between for Greenwood to date.
However, Bestikas may be about to hand him a lifeline to restart his career. Turkish outlet Sabah Spor says Besiktas have added Greenwood to their list of targets.
It is claimed they are investigating what level of fitness Greenwood is currently at. Bestikas have also made an enquiry through agents regarding the possibility of a deal.
English clubs have until 11pm on Friday to complete any incoming transfer business. However, the Turkish transfer window does not shut until September 15.
Greenwood trained separately away from United over the summer so it remains to be seen whether he would be fit to play for Besiktas if a deal materialised. He hasn’t played a match since January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape and sexual assault.
He was charged last October but the case was dropped in February by the Crown Prosecution Service. The CPS said in a statement that “there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”.
Greenwood was linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League last week. However, Steven Gerrard, the manager of Al-Ettifaq, claimed rumours of a move to his club were “fake news”.
Roma were also rumoured to be interested in taking him to Serie A. But the Italian team managed by ex-United boss Jose Mourinho have also distanced themselves from a deal.
Greenwood played 129 times for United after making his debut at the age of 17. He scored 35 goals and registered 12 assists for the club as well as winning one cap for England in 2020.
Current United manager Erik ten Hag refused to discuss Greenwood at a press conference last week following the news of his agreed departure. The Dutchman repeatedly dodged questions about the striker and instead wanted to focus on the players he has available.
He said: “I only have statements about our performance. I have a lot of focus on my team so I focus on the players who are available.”
