Manchester United have reached an agreement with Ralf Rangnick to become their interim manager, according to reports.

He will leave his position as head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow to take up the role, it's understood.

Old Trafford are still in the hunt for a permanent manager, reports the Athletic.

Rangnick has agreed to a six-month deal with the club, meaning he will be in the Red Devil's dugout until the end of the season, when he'll have a further two years in a consultancy role.

However, work permit reasons mean he'll be unable to take charge in time for United's game against Chelsea at the weekend.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was let go from his position as United manager after the side's dismal 4-1 defeat to Watford.

The loss – their third in a row in the Premier League – has left them languishing in eighth spot in the table, so the board sacked Solskjaer and have been on the lookout for an interim replacement.

Rangnick has had great success as a director of football in Germany, taking up the position with Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig from 2012 onwards, while the 63-year-old also had a stint as the manager at Leipzig.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has previously described his countryman, Rangnick, as 'one of the best, if not the best German coach'.

Rangnick's first game in charge of United will likely be Arsenal on December 2, an 8:15pm kick-off that will be played at Old Trafford.

The German has become one of the brightest tactical minds in football. Speaking about his philosophy to Bundesliga.com, he said: "“Tactics, fitness, and rules are all hugely important, but they’re only a means to an end.

"My job – the job – is to improve players. Players follow you as a manager if they feel that you make them better.

"That’s the greatest, most sincere motivation there is.”
