Man Utd promote exciting teenagers Kobbie Mainoo and Rhys Bennett to first-team squad after the FA Youth Cup winning pair impressed during World Cup-training-break in Spain

  • Mainoo is a midfielder and played in both of United’s friendly defeats last week

Manchester United will include two new names in the first-team ahead of their domestic return, after promoting two exciting youngsters to Erik ten Hag’s squad over the winter break. 

United took advantage of the halt in Premier League action by taking a warm- weather training session in Spain, where the players who weren’t at the World Cup were hard at work preparing for action to resume. 

Ten Hag’s side have also competed in much-needed Friendlies, losing 4-2 to Cadiz before going down to a Nabil Fekir goal in a 1-0 loss to Real Betis. 


Manchester United are set to promote two academy youngsters to their first team squad 

Those games, however, have given United the chance to take a closer look at their youngster stars and it’s led to a first-team call-up for both Kobbie Mainoo and Rhys Bennett. 

Mainoo played in both games over in Spain, while Bennett also clocked-up some minutes the Betis defeat.  

The pair could now be included in United’s squad for their Carabao Cup clash with Burnley next Wednesday, their first competitive game since the Premier League win over Fulham on November 13th.

Bennett was United’s captain as they beat Nottingham Forest to lift the FA Youth Cup in 2022 

Academy graduates Mainoo, 17, a midfielder, and defender Bennett, 18, trained with the first team on Thursday and were left out of Under-21’s squad for Tuesday night’s Papa John’s Trophy game. 

Both were part of the Red Devils side that lifted the FA Youth Cup last season, with Bennett skippering the side to victory over Nottingham Forest. 

The Manchester Evening News are reporting that United drew 1-1 with Everton in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Carrington on Wednesday and that both Mainoo and Bennett ‘may have played’ some part in the match. 

The academy graduates have been training with the first-team on their return to Carrington 

Mainoo is yet to make a first-team appearance for the club, but was an unused sub against Newcastle earlier in the season. The England Under-18 star is said to be ‘highly regarded’ by academy staff and one of the club’s best prospects. 

While Bennett played a key role in captaining the youth side and could make his own first-team breakthrough in the second half of the season. 

After the Burnley Carabao Cup outing, United return to Premier League action on December 27th, when the host Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.
