Ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Watford, the Glazers now have a new reason to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. And that’s because Zinedine Zidane appears to be warming to the idea of taking over at Old Trafford, less than a year on from his departure from Real Madrid. And with the Frenchman tempted, the Red Devils would be wise to wield the axe and bring a serial winner to the Premier League.

United have been in dire form recently under Solskjaer.

The Red Devils have lost six of their last 12 matches, exiting the Carabao Cup and falling away in the race for the Premier League title in the process.

And that’s despite the United hierarchy backing the Norwegian with the huge signings of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer transfer window.

For now, the Glazers have held fire.

Some members of the United board feel Solskjaer deserves time to turn the situation around, despite others believing a change of manager is required as soon as possible.

And with the Daily Record claiming Zidane is warming to the idea of managing United, the Glazers now have a new reason to make a change.

There’s no denying Solskjaer has made progress with this United team.

He finished third during his first full season at the helm, with Bruno Fernandes helping then finish behind only Liverpool and Manchester City.

And United ended up second last term, with Solskjaer’s side bouncing back after a stuttering start to the campaign.

But with Zidane now keen on the prospect of taking over at Old Trafford, the Glazers would be wise to show ambition by changing things up.

Solskjaer has never had the credentials for this job, with just stints with Molde and Cardiff on his CV.

But Zidane, across his two stints at Real Madrid, has shown he’s one of the best managers in the game.

He would bring silverware to the club, you’d expect. Especially if his record at the Bernabeu if anything to go by.

The 49-year-old won three Champions League titles on the trot during his first spell at the club, beating the likes of Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool in finals in the process.

And he also claimed the La Liga title on two occasions, in 2017 and 2020 respectively.

Zidane also made Real an enterprising side, building on the foundations of Carlo Ancelotti.

Los Blancos were attacking more often than not, often blitzing their opponents with Cristiano Ronaldo particularly majestic.

And he also blooded young players, too, with midfielder Federico Valverde a particularly big success.

Zidane is on a different level to Solskjaer as a manager and, though his lack of Premier League experience is a minus, his current stance makes him worth pursuing.

And whether that actually happens, with Solskjaer expected to keep his job for this weekend’s match with Watford, is something only time will tell.

Zidane was recently urged to consider the United job by former France boss Raymond Domenech, meanwhile, who feels Ronaldo could be a powerful bait when it comes to taking over.

“What job is he made for when he’s been a multiple Champions League winner with Real Madrid?” he said.

“What’s left? [Manchester] City, United, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich? There’s five or six clubs.

“After that, if he takes another club, they’re a step down for him, for someone of his level.

“There comes a point when you can’t let that possibility slip.

“He’s also got, with Ronaldo, a direct relay, a translator from Spanish to English.

“He’ll also get away from people who say he only achieved what he did because it was Real Madrid because he knew the players and he’ll prove he’s really a top manager.

“That’s why I tell him: go for it. Or stay in your comfort, but I don’t think that’s his desire.”
