Mauricio Pochettino is the favourite to take over at Manchester United this summer, but Teddy Sheringham has warned the Argentine coach that he faces walking into an “absurd” situation. The Red Devils suffered another disappointing result last time out, drawing 1-1 with relegation-threatened Burnley on Tuesday.

It’s the latest blow in their hopes to finish in the top four and secure Champions League football next season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had seemingly got the club back on track with an impressive second-place finish last year.

But things quickly deteriorated at the start of the new campaign before he was dismissed.

Ralf Rangnick’s appointment on an interim basis until the end of the season helped steady the ship somewhat with United climbing back up the table.

Securing Champions League football for next season is seen as the main priority for Rangnick now after they were knocked out of the FA Cup.

But that is far from guaranteed with just six points separating five teams in the battle for that final spot in the top four.

Sheringham, though, believes United’s problems lie much deeper than where they finish in the table come the end of the season.

Rangnick has implemented his own tactics since replacing Solskjaer, but that will almost certainly change next year should Pochettino leave his role at Paris Saint-Germain.

And Sheringham is in disbelief at his former club for creating an “absurd” situation where a whole season could be wasted.

“If he leaves at the end of the season, and then someone completely different, like Pochettino, comes in, it’s a whole new vibe of how you want to play football,” Sheringham told Genting Casino.

“This season’s going to be lost. It will be wasted and you have to start again.

“If the next manager brings in his own staff, his own players – it’s just a whole new revolution again.

“It’s such an absurd situation I see at Man United, and that’s why you get uncertainty, that’s why you get the differences of performances in the Man United team at the moment.”

But Sheringham does add that he feels Pochettino is the right man for the job.

“Manchester United have always been brought up on that, that vibe of taking the game to the opposition, it was always Fergie’s way, he never worried about the opposition, what they’ll do to us, it’s about what we can do to them,” Sheringham said.

“I think, if you look along those lines, I would say the perfect fit would be Pochettino, without a doubt.

“I think when he was at Tottenham he wanted the ball, he wanted to play with the ball and hurt the opposition, and I think that the Manchester United crowd would love his philosophy in the way that he takes the game to the opposition.

“Obviously, he didn’t win anything at Tottenham, but if you’ve got bigger and better players than what he had there who knows what he could achieve.

“He would be the man for me, he would be the number one choice.”
