Manchester United outcast Donny Van de Beek has reportedly made a decision over where his future lies ahead of the January transfer window. The Dutchman has found minutes hard to come by since arriving at Old Trafford and has seen speculation linking him with a move away.

The 24-year-old has struggled to make an impact since joining United from Ajax for £35million in 2020, making a mere four Premier League starts across nearly a season and a half.

The midfielder has seen only 61 minutes of action in the top-flight so far in the current campaign as he found himself seemingly frozen out under the recently-departed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Van de Beek was handed a rare start by stand-in manager Michael Carrick for United’s Champions League triumph over Villarreal last week, but speculation is rife surrounding a move away from Old Trafford in the search for regular first team football.

With Ralf Rangnick having been announced as manager of the Red Devils on an interim basis until the end of the season, it remains to be seen if Van de Beek will receive more game-time, but it appears the Dutchman has already made up his mind on where his future lies.

According to ESPN, that preference is to remain with United and fight for his future, though his January plans could change depending on how his situation develops under the new manager.

Question marks have been raised over where Van de Beek fits into the United team, with Bruno Fernandes often occupying a more attacking role with Paul Pogba, Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic all providing competition within midfield.

After Solskjaer denied the Dutchman a deadline day move to Everton in the summer, Van de Beek expressed his gratitude over United’s faith in him at the time when speaking to ex-United legend Rio Ferdinand on his FIVE podcast.

“They were clear they wanted me to stay here,” van de Beek revealed. “The manager was really positive about me and he said, ‘I need you and I want to keep you here.’

“He was really positive about me and I’m feeling well. He sees a big difference, that I’m a little bit stronger now. He can see that I now have one year experience here in England. If he sees me now and in the beginning, he sees a big difference.”

“I just need to work hard and I hope I can show the people, one day, what I can do,” he added.

“You can never promise [game time]. This is football, and I think you can never promise a player if he will play or not. You can train every day hard, but in the end you need game time to show your best shape. If you play once in a month, you cannot show your best.”

Sources informed ESPN that Solskjaer harboured doubts over Van de Beek’s defensive discipline, but with United expressing a desire to take on a more technical coach as the Norwegian’s successor, both in the short and long term, the Dutchman could be rewarded with greater opportunities in the near future.

While Van de Beek appears to see patience as the answer at Old Trafford, one of his fellow countrymen Rafael van der Vaart feels the former Ajax midfielder is wasted on United’s bench and would be better off elsewhere.

“As nobody will leave, [Donny] needs a bit of luck to get into the starting 11,” Van der Vaart said. “He’s too good a player to play two seasons on the bench.

“For me, he needs playing minutes and needs them fast. He’s young, but time flies.

“When you come with high expectations — it must be really hard for him. A club like Borussia Dortmund was the perfect next step in his career. A club like Manchester United? Maybe the step was too big for him.”
