Man Utd ‘open transfer talks’ to seal free agent Messi highly rates
Erik ten Hag reviews the Newcastle defeat
Manchester United have reportedly opened talks regarding a potential summer deal for Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar. And the elite-level endorsements the 24-year-old has received, including from seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, indicate the quality he possesses.
Aouar could become a free agent this summer, with his Lyon contract set to expire in July.
The Frenchman, who recently switched his international allegiance to Algeria, was previously one of Europe’s most highly-rated young midfielders.
And with Erik ten Hag viewing the area as important to bolster in his second summer transfer window, Aouar is said to be in the Dutchman’s sights.
According to Spanish reports, United are in contact with Lyon as they seek to hold talks with Aouar about a potential Old Trafford switch.
Given his contract is set to run out in three months, Lyon ultimately wouldn’t have a say in his future if he doesn’t extend terms with the Ligue 1 outfit.

The report claims United face serious competition from Real Betis, who are ‘waiting’ for Aouar because he prioritises a move to La Liga.
However, Champions League football is considered a key factor in his decision. Currently, the Red Devils will offer that next season, but Betis won’t.
Among Aouar’s admirers is none other than Messi, who named him in his list of top 15 young players to watch in 2020.
The Argentine icon said: “He is always calm with the ball at his feet with an excellent technical quality.”

Another world-class name who has sung Aouar’s praises is Manchester City maestro Kevin De Bruyne.
The Belgian was left dazzled by Aouar after Lyon knocked Pep Guardiola’s side out of the Champions League in the same year.
“I don’t follow the French league as much as other leagues, but if I have to pick one player that has impressed me from Lyon, it would be Houssem Aouar. He was fantastic,” De Bruyne hailed.
If United splash a nine-figure fee on a new striker at the end of the season, recruiting Aouar on a free transfer could prove to be too good value to ignore.
