Man Utd ‘open talks’ for Neymar transfer in hint Sheikh Jassim may win race

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews Bournemouth game

Manchester United are in active negotiations over a blockbuster summer move for wantaway PSG forward Neymar, according to reports. It could indicate that Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani is in pole position to buy the club from the Glazers amid speculation about his transfer plans.

According to L’Equipe, United have started talks with PSG over a potential summer deal for the 31-year-old.

The Ligue 1 giants are said to prefer a permanent transfer, with Neymar keen to leave France for a new challenge.

But the report claims that PSG could accept a loan offer – where United would contribute to his salary – with or without an option to buy.

It’s claimed that Erik ten Hag’s midfield general Casemiro is in contact with Neymar to convince him of a switch to Old Trafford.

And the Brazil international’s potential United arrival could be a significant hint as to where the club’s takeover saga is headed.

In April, The Sun reported that Sheikh Jassim wanted to bring Neymar to Manchester as a statement signing if he beat Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the race to buy United.

The Qatari businessman wants to complete a full takeover this summer to end the Glazers’ unpopular 18-year tenure at the helm.

And the Red Devils’ apparent discussions with PSG could suggest that figures are bracing themselves for Sheikh Jassim’s success.

Ten Hag wants attacking reinforcements ahead of his second season as manager, but he is thought to be targeting a striker rather than a winger.

United have been strongly linked with Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos and Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund ahead of the summer transfer window.

But Ten Hag could save most of his budget, tighter than last summer due to FFP limitations, by sealing a loan deal for Neymar and using Marcus Rashford as his first-choice striker next term.

It would allow more investment in other areas needing attention, like his goalkeeper, defence and central midfield.

With United one point away from guaranteeing Champions League football next season, Neymar could view linking up with Brazilian buddies Casemiro, Fred and Antony in M16 as an enticing proposition.
