Manchester United are in danger of losing Paul Pogba on a free transfer for the second time in his career. The Red Devils shelled out a world record fee to bring him back to Old Trafford in 2016, and club legend Gary Pallister has claimed the club should be embarrassed if they lose him for free next year.

United received just an £800,000 compensation fee for the Frenchman when he signed for Juventus in 2012, before setting a new transfer record to bring him back four years later in a deal worth £89million.

Now that Pogba has entered the final year of his United deal, the club are in danger of once again losing him on a free transfer in 2022.

Of course, it would not be an issue if the midfielder was keen to sign a new contract with the club, but all offers so far have been rebuffed.

Another viable option for United would have been to cash in on him this summer, although a proposed move to PSG now seems to have gone quiet in the wake of Lionel Messi’s blockbuster signing.

Ominously for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, Pogba could sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January as a precursor to a free summer move.

Gary Pallister, who won four league titles and made over 300 appearances for the club, had some choice words regarding the situation.

He told SunSport: “It’s an ongoing issue – the talk around Paul. For everybody concerned I think it would be [better] if a decision is made.

“If his agent [Mino Raiola] gets involved again – he seems to chuck a few hand grenades in here, there and everywhere – and it’s not particularly healthy.

“You certainly don’t want to be embarrassed again and lose that player on a free transfer.

“United can’t be seen to be losing that amount of money over Paul again after the first time he left.

“So I would think something has got to be sorted before the season or very soon into the season.”

The PSG option could have been an attractive one for both player and club, with the French side reportedly willing to cough up £40m.

However, after a sensational summer which has seen them lure in the likes of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos and Messi himself, the wage bill is practically bursting at the seams.

As such, it makes sense for all parties to wait until a free transfer becomes possible in the summer of 2022 – that is, all parties except for Man Utd.

Still, in the meantime United may as well make use of their prodigious talent, and Solskjaer is likely to employ him in a key role for the club this season.

On the flipside, Pogba is also reportedly content to be staying with the club for another year, presumably in the knowledge that the world will become his oyster next summer, with staying at United an option which is likely to remain on the table.
