Erik ten Hag is looking to bolster his attacking options before the transfer window closes and Antony, his former player at Ajax, is his top target.

However, the Dutch club are demanding €100m (£84.5m) and United have so far refused to meet their asking price.

According to The Telegraph, United have been offered a cheaper alternative as Asensio has been made available for €30m (£25.3m).

The report claims that United were made aware of Asensio availability before they completed their £60m deal for Casemiro.

Asensio is now in the final year of his contract with Madrid and the Spanish champions would rather secure a transfer fee for him this summer, rather than see him leave on a free next year.

The 26-year-old has played just seven minutes across both of Madrid’s La Liga matches so far this season.

Last term, he started 19 games in La Liga and another two in the Champions League.

‘I do not know what will happen,’ Ancelotti told Movistar about Asensio’s situation after Madrid’s Champions League draw on Thursday.

‘He is looking at something to see if he can get out.

‘If he doesn’t leave, from September 1 he will be a 100 per cent Real Madrid player.’
