Man Utd ‘monitoring transfer’ for star Pochettino thinks is ‘a true great’

Manchester United are reportedly considering a move to sign Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti. The Italy star has been made available for transfer this summer and the Red Devils are said to be admirers.

United are in the market for a midfielder before the end of the transfer window. Fiorentina and Morocco star Sofyan Amrabat has been repeatedly linked with a move to Old Trafford.

However, United are yet to make an official move for the 27-year-old. Fred has been sold to Fenerbahce, while Donny van de Beek is also up for sale.

Scott McTominay’s future has been in doubt and the Scot leaving would leave Erik ten Hag short of options in the middle of the park. A new name that can be added to a list of targets is a midfielder Mauricio Pochettino once dubbed as “a truly great player.”

The newspaper version of L’Equipe, via GFFN, claims that United cannot be ruled out in the race for Verratti. It is said that the 30-year-old has an agreement on personal terms with Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli.

However, Al-Ahli are yet to finalise a fee with PSG. Bayern Munich are claimed to have shown interest in Verratti in recent days but United are also monitoring his situation.

GFFN says PSG want up to £51m for Verratti, who still has three years remaining on his contract at the Parc des Princes. Both football advisor Luis Campos and head coach Luis Enrique have informed Verratti that he is surplus to requirements.

He was left out of the PSG squad for Saturday’s 1-1 Ligue draw away to Toulouse, which saw Kylian Mbappe make a comeback off the bench. Verratti first joined PSG in 2012 and has made over 400 appearances in all competitions.

He was managed by Pochettino for 18 months between 2021 and 2022. The now Chelsea boss was a big fan of Verratti and explained what type of player United would be getting if they signed him.

Pochettino said in February 2021: “He is a player with a very good ability to read the game. He allows for us each time to have attacking possession and to bring the ball out into good situations, to better start off attacks.

“In attacking phases, he can double his efforts and provoke situations going forward. For me, he is a truly great player.”
