Man Utd may have thrown another £72m down the drain if Hojlund fear comes true

Rasmus Hojlund’s potential is undisputable – he is a fan favourite for a reason – but the Denmark striker has joined Manchester United at the wrong time, according to Paul Parker. Hojlund’s early struggles are not entirely self-inflicted, and the Red Devils can’t afford to waste another big-money young talent through a poor surrounding system.
Jadon Sancho has been one of the stories of the season at Old Trafford amid his continued two-month exile from Erik ten Hag’s first team.
United splashed £73million to sign him from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 when he belonged in the same conversation as Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr.
Just two years later, he has repaid little of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith and is one of too many examples of big-money signings that haven’t come good at the club now compared to a ‘graveyard’.
Hojlund – a £72m addition from Atalanta in the summer – has shown glimpses suggesting he has the makings of a prolific Premier League striker.
He’s still awaiting his first league goal for United after eight games, though, as the club experience one of their worst-ever starts to a season.
His frustrations reached breaking point upon his substitution at Fulham on Saturday, shouting at the bench before displaying a face of thunder as he sat down.

Hojlund’s superb brace against Galatasaray – two of his three goals for the club – offered a taste of the raw talent he possesses at age 20.
But his development will falter if he continues to be starved of quality service from United’s underperforming attack. And Parker believes he hasn’t joined the club at an ideal time.
“There is definitely a lot to build on, also keeping his age in mind, even though we have to ask the questions,” Parker told SpilXperten.
“Is Manchester United the right club for him at this moment in time? No, it is not. Is he being coached by the right manager? Yes, I think he is. Did he arrive at Manchester United at the wrong time? Yes, he did. 100 per cent.”

Parker has been particularly impressed by Hojlund’s work rate during a difficult start to life in English football, claiming he has been one of Ten Hag’s best players this season.
He added: “Yes, of course, they would like to see some goals in the Premier League, but given Manchester United’s situation right now, the work ethic is the most important thing. He is working so hard.
“He is a very good centre forward; I can see that with the way he holds the ball in the build-up play, and especially the run he makes. He is sticking out like a sore thumb.”
Hojlund will be motivated to add to his Champions League tally when he returns to the Parken Stadium to face FC Copenhagen on Wednesday.
