Man Utd may have leaked Mason Greenwood’s fate as club investigation continues
Bagpipe player serenades fans ahead of Man Utd friendly
Manchester United may have already given away their plans for Mason Greenwood’s long-term future at Old Trafford as a result of their transfer negotiations. The one-cap England forward remains the subject of a club investigation before any announcement will be made over whether he remains at United and reintegrated into Erik ten Hag’s squad, or whether the 21-year-old will depart.
Greenwood was not named in the club’s squad for their pre-season tour of the US, as he remains away from first-team training until the international investigation is concluded. He has been training privately away from United for several months in order to maintain his fitness ahead of the new season.
Though United are yet to confirm the findings and results of their investigation, he has been linked with a move away from the club. The Athletic claim that discussions have taken place over a loan to Serie A side Atalanta while the Red Devils attempt to land the Italian outfit’s striker Rasmus Hojlund.
Atalanta do not appear interested in taking Greenwood on a temporary basis and United proposing a loan instead of a permanent deal or alternatively cancelling his contract at this current time may suggest that they see him returning and having a future at United.

Clubs in Italy, China, Saudi Arabia and Turkey have all been linked with loans for Greenwood while United are looking to bolster Ten Hag’s forward options. Hojlund is viewed as the team’s next priority once Andre Onana’s transfer is over the line, joining Mason Mount as a new signing.
United legend Wayne Rooney has advised Greenwood to leave United, however, as he feels that a parting would be mutually beneficial for both parties. “It leaves Mason Greenwood in a position where he is stuck. So for Mason, it’s a bad position to be in because I’m sure he just wants to play football,” Rooney told The Athletic.

“But for the club, its image and ensuring they make the right decisions, it’s almost a catch 22. I think the best thing for Mason now is to get out of the club and go and develop somewhere else. He needs to get back playing because it has been a long time.
“With everything that has happened and how long the internal investigation has taken, it’s probably got to a place now where Mason just needs to go and play and to try and get his career back on track.
“It’s a difficult position for Mason but for the club as well. You have to make sure you get to the right decision before moving forward and it looks like they’re really struggling to get to that place.”
