Man Utd may fast-track Greenwood after ‘agreement’ due to Ten Hag dilemma

Man Utd: Shaw comments on Mount's signing

Manchester United could fast-track Mason Greenwood into Erik ten Hag’s plans for the new season if the club’s probe into his future emerges in his favour. The Red Devils have completed a six-month investigation over Greenwood’s future in the wake of his January 2022 arrest, and an announcement is expected as early as next week.

United’s probe commenced after the Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Greenwood in February.

If the United No 11 gets the green light to return to first-team training, Ten Hag will view him as an option to bolster his attacking firepower.

He’s also moved to do that this summer. United confirmed the £72million signing of Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund and paraded him at Old Trafford before Saturday’s 3-1 win against RC Lens.

However, Hojlund will miss the opening few weeks of his maiden campaign in England through a minor injury picked up during pre-season with Atalanta.

The 20-year-old is training but may not be considered match fit until September, opening the door for someone to take an opportunity.

Marcus Rashford will start the season as Ten Hag’s first-choice striker, with Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho sharing minutes on the left.

Anthony Martial has missed the entirety of pre-season through injury, thwarting United’s attempts to cash in on the Frenchman this summer.

Greenwood, out of action for 19 months, will likely require as much if not more, time than Hojlund to regain match sharpness.

But if the 21-year-old returns to training and instantly hits the ground running – after reportedly undergoing weeks of private training – Ten Hag may deem him ready to re-emerge from the sidelines.

According to The Sun, the United dressing room agrees that Greenwood should be allowed to return to the frame.

Ten Hag’s stars are ready to “protect” him as he prepares to potentially return to centre stage at one of the world’s biggest football clubs.

Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer handed Greenwood his United debut in March 2019, he has registered 35 goals and 12 assists in 129 games.

He can operate as the central striker or on the right wing, potentially offering Antony, Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo competition.

Of course, if United decide to give Greenwood a chance to continue his career at Old Trafford, a season-long loan may make sense to ensure he returns with plenty of match experience back under his belt.

There is reportedly interest in his services in Italy, should the Old Trafford giants opt to start his comeback elsewhere.
