Manchester United are not planning to sign a striker in January, according to reports. That is despite uncertainties over Cristiano Ronaldo’s future and Anthony Martial’s fitness.

Ronaldo scored his 700th club goal as United came from behind to beat Everton on Sunday. But the Portugal superstar hasn’t started a Premier League match since the 4-0 loss to Brentford on August 13.

Martial, meanwhile, made his first league start of the campaign at Goodison Park following a number of injury problems. But after assisting Antony for the equaliser, the Frenchman limped off before half-time to make way for Ronaldo.

Martial has been in good form when he has been able to get on the pitch. But Erik ten Hag is not able to rely upon him week in, week out.

But, according to the Manchester Evening News, United are likely to wait until the summer before adding a new signing in attack. The Red Devils spent around £200million in the summer on six new faces and are therefore not set to splash out again in January.

Antony has hit the ground running in the Premier League following his £85.5m arrival. The Brazilian winger has scored in each of his first three domestic appearances for the club.

Fellow signings Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez have already become key figures in the United side, while Tyrell Malacia was dropped against Everton after a couple of below-par performances.

Speaking last month, Ten Hag insisted talks were already being held over future transfer plans. And he hinted the club could look to be active in January.

Ten Hag said: “We have many meetings, we have to improve the structures in and around the club. We will also look to the window in January or next summer already to improve our way of playing by making plans.”

However, the club’s football director John Murtough insisted the primary focus on recruitment is in summer windows. Murtough said during September’s meeting with investors: “We will continue to support Erik in ensuring he has players with the right quality and characters to achieve success, while ensuring that investment remains consistent with our commitment to financial sustainability.

“Overall, we are ahead of schedule in our recruitment plans as envisaged at the start of the summer, and we do not anticipate the same level of activity in future windows. As always, our planning focuses on the summer window.”
