Man Utd make change to Europa League squad as Ten Hag takes action

Erik ten Hag reviews Man Utd's draw with Sevilla

Manchester United have added teenage goalkeeper Dermot Mee to their Europa League squad following an injury to Tom Heaton, according to reports. The goalkeeper recently confirmed he’d suffered a foot injury. But while he’s hopeful of returning to the squad later this month, Erik ten Hag has decided to change things up.

The Manchester Evening News say Mee has been drafted in as a replacement for Heaton, with the 20-year-old set to provide competition for David De Gea and Jack Butland.

The young shot-stopper played four times for National League side Altrincham earlier this season as he looks to develop.

But United added Mee to their squad earlier this week.

Butland and Radek Vitek were both named on the bench for United’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla on Thursday night.

And Heaton isn’t the only player the Red Devils are currently without as they look to keep their hopes of a cup treble alive.

Man Utd takeover: Man Utd making plans for five players

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were both forced out of United’s draw with Sevilla, with the pair both key players for Ten Hag this season.

United are already without Luke Shaw, while Scott McTominay, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford are all sidelined as well.

Ten Hag addressed Martinez’s injury after the draw at Old Trafford, admitting he was facing an anxious wait to determine the extent of the 25-year-old’s problem.

“No, it is not the area,” the 53-year-old said when asked if Martinez had injured his Achilles.

“But I can’t tell what it is. But it is not the area of Achilles.

“We have very good replacements with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, so we have players who can replace them. But of course, it is a miss.

“I think he will not play on Sunday. It looks like that but I can’t say what is the diagnosis and I prefer to wait and then we are clear and we know exactly what it is.

“I have spoken with him, he is okay, he is calm. Of course and we compete in three competitions and then you need a squad. So if Licha Martinez, Rapha Varane are not available on Sunday then others have to do it.

“We have seen on Saturday Harry Maguire played a good game and he came in tonight and also played a good game.

“I have an idea what we can play on Sunday but first we have to see tomorrow and talk with medical, see who came out of the game and then we have a plan and then we will bring a good team on the pitch.”

Ten Hag also criticised United after they threw away the game, insisting they suffered from bad luck.

“There were some unlucky moments, injuries,” added the Dutchman.

“We had to make some subs with injuries. Rapha [Varane] at half-time.

“Also Anthony Martial, we had to sub him because it was his first game after [injury] – his first start.

“Antony as well, and Bruno [Fernandes] because they were close to a second booking.

“So we had to make some subs and then lose control in the unlucky moment [Sevilla’s first goal].

“Another unlucky moment with Licha Martinez. We have 10 [men] and we conceded two own goals.

“It was bad luck and we have to deal with that.

“Of course, we have to learn, we have to kill the game but still everything is open for the next game.”
