Manchester United have learned Zinedine Zidane’s stance on replacing Erik ten Hag. The Frenchman was previously a target for the Red Devils but it appears he has no intention of managing the club in the future.
Ten Hag is not even five months into his first season as United boss. There is no indication at all that his spell at the club is going to be a brief one.
United have made visible improvements, despite still only sitting fifth in the Premier League table. After a dodgy start to the campaign, Ten Hag has overseen victories over Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham.
Only a disastrous run of form between now and the end of the season would see the Dutchman’s future thrown into doubt. But if that were to happen, Zidane’s name can be ruled out as a potential successor.
Man Utd's next six Premier League fixtures
French outlet L’Equipe claims the former France midfielder is open to a return to club management. Zidane was holding out for the French national job but it appears Didier Deschamps is set to sign a new contract following the World Cup final loss to Argentina on Sunday.
Deschamps’ new deal could keep him in the job up until after the 2026 tournament. Therefore, Zidane is looking at his options for taking over at a new club instead.
However, the report says he only wants to manage in leagues he knows well, and will not venture into the Premier League despite improving his English. Zidane has only ever managed Real Madrid, doing so on two occasions and winning three Champions League trophies in that time.

La Liga is therefore a league he knows well but he wants to join a club that will compete for major honours straight away. Aside from Real, Barcelona are the only club in that category in Spain and there is little chance of him ever going there.
The French league is clearly a potential destination and Paris Saint-Germain were interested in Zidane in the summer following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino. But L’Equipe report the 50-year-old has no interest in PSG with their current structure.
Zidane had a five-year spell in Serie A with Juventus during his playing days, so perhaps Italy could be an option for him to fill his time while waiting for Deschamps to call it a day. But it is clear that if United were to move on from Ten Hag, Zidane will not be a viable candidate.
