Neil Lennon believes that Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers would be able to resist taking the Manchester United job, even if they came calling during the summer. The former Foxes midfielder cited two reasons that Rodgers could be tempted to stay put, even with Leicester faltering in mid-table this season.

For the last two campaigns, Rodgers and Leicester fell away in the closing stages to agonisingly miss out on the top four.

But that has not distracted from the stellar work he has done in the Midlands, and United’s reported interest is a testament to that.

Before Ralf Rangnick was appointed on an interim basis in November, Rodgers was allegedly on the club’s hitlist after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was dismissed.

And that interest could resurface at the end of the season, with Rangnick set to take up a consultancy role at Old Trafford once his six-month stint on the sidelines is up.

Despite interest from one of the biggest clubs in English football, Lennon believes that Rodgers has plenty of incentive to stay put at the King Power Stadium.

“This [interest] is all a testament to the work that he has done, not just from his time at Leicester, but Celtic and Liverpool too,” he told Express Sport.

“His progression throughout his career is on an upward trajectory all the time.

“He has come out and been really firm that he doesn’t believe the speculation, and that he’s happy at Leicester.

“Clubs always get their resolve tested, it might be a big enough carrot for Brendan but he is happy in his work at Leicester.

“I think he’s happy with the quality of player that they can bring to the club now which may not have been the case a few years ago.”

While Rodgers has undoubtedly overseen a steady improvement since taking charge of Leicester in 2019, he may not be too pleased with their current standing, which sees them sit ten points off the top four.

But aside from general satisfaction in his work, Lennon’s point about the quality of player the Foxes can attract has certainly become apparent in recent years.

The likes of Wesley Fofana and Youri Tielemans represented Leicester’s commitment to conducting transfer business with a long-term vision.

That was only compounded in the summer, with the arrivals of Patson Daka and Boubakary Soumare seen as two of Europe’s leading prospects.

Unfortunately for the Foxes, however, their pulling power is likely to pale in comparison to that of Man Utd for the foreseeable future.

And the disparity could become even more obvious with Rangnick pulling strings behind the scenes, but it remains to be seen whether Rodgers could indeed resist the temptation of a Red Devils phone call as Lennon suspects.
