Man Utd ‘in pole position’ for Darwin Nunez on five-year deal with bid prepped

Manchester United are in ‘pole position’ to sign Darwin Nunez and have a first bid prepared.

According to transfer expert Nicolo Schira, United are already in discussions with his agent Jorge Mendes, who recently took up the Benfica striker as a client. The reporter wrote online: "Manchester United are in pole to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica in the transfers window. Talks ongoing with his new agent Jorge Mendes for 5-year contract. #MUFC are preparing the first official bid to Benfica. "

Nunez, 22, has been linked with some of the top clubs in Europe in recent weeks, with his incredible 31 goals in 36 games catching the interest of some of the elite teams.

Indeed, it’s thought that, as well as United, Premier League rivals Chelsea, and Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain are also in hot pursuit of the Uruguayan too. West Ham made a failed move for the star in the January transfer window.

Interest has flared up after Nunez revealed on social media that he is in the process of changing his agent. “I want to clarify that I will not renew my contract with my representative Edgardo Lasalvia,” he wrote.

Subsequent reports linked the striker to superagent Mendes, who has connections at some of the top clubs in the Premier League and beyond. However, it will take a pretty penny to sign the highly-rated youngster. Nunez's release clause is reportedly £127milion but the Portuguese club might part ways with the player at around £60million.

It’s reported that Benfica boss Nelson Verissimo is hopeful his side can get near to the massive fee paid Atletico Madrid paid for Joao Felix, who joined for £113million in July 2019. He said via the Mirror: "Darwin is an excellent player, he has shown all his qualities.

"He has helped the team a lot, it is true that the team has also helped him a lot. It will be at the end of this season or the following season, depending on what it has shown, it is natural that it will arouse interest from other clubs and naturally, there may be the timing in which it goes.

"Now regarding numbers, I hope as a Benfica fan that it will go for numbers close to those that were Joao Felix's numbers. Now it's not for me to enter numbers on that field.”
