Teddy Sheringham wants to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer given more time to turn things around at Manchester United, but largely because of the backing he’s received from the Glazers in the transfer market. United’s 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool last weekend appeared to be the end for Solskjaer with fans calling for a change of manager.

Reports on Monday indicated that meetings were being held and Antonio Conte was being discussed as a potential successor to Solskjaer.

However, United have seemingly decided to stick with the Norwegian head coach for now.

They now face a Tottenham side in a similar position to United with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side in need of a win.

It sets up a fascinating contest between the two Premier League sides with both managers in either dugout facing increasing pressure.

Solskjaer arguably more so with some suggestions that he only has a few games to turn around United’s fortunes.

It won’t exactly be an easy run for the Red Devils either with the trip to Tottenham quickly followed by games against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Summer signings Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho have struggled to make an immediate impact at Old Trafford, with the latter left on the bench against Liverpool.

Cristiano Ronaldo hit the ground running after his return to the club, but he’s failed to find the net in United’s last four Premier League games.

DON’T MISS

Close to £400million has been spent on new signings under Solskjaer with Donny van de Beek still yet to break into the first team on a regular basis.

Question marks have been raised on the signings made under Solskjaer, but Sheringham believes the Glazers must stick with Solskjaer to get the most out of their huge investment over the past few years.

“You’ve still got to give him time,” he told The Sun.

“You can think, ‘5-0, oh s***! What the hell is going on?’.

“He’s been given money, he brought in the players he wanted, you’ve got to give a manager the chance to turn it around.

“They’ve backed him in the market, now they’ve got to back him when the chips are down.

“I know it hasn’t been great but it’s still early in the season, things can change very quickly.

“Ole knows the situation, he knows his neck is on the line.

“I don’t know how long you give him, look at the fixtures, see what you can do to turn it around. That’s all he can do and then let others decide.”
