Man Utd icon Peter Schmeichel mocks Liverpool in subtle dig

Peter Schmeichel has jokingly labelled Liverpool as just a “very good domestic team” after Manchester United began their turnaround in form against the Reds last month. United had lost both their opening league fixtures and were coming off the back of a demoralising 4-0 defeat to Brentford before their home tie against Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had also endured a stuttering start to the new campaign with draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace, but were still strong favourites to leave Old Trafford with all three points. But Liverpool were dominated from the get-go by Erik ten Hag’s side with the Reds looking a shell of the side from last year.

United are now on a four-game winning streak while Liverpool are still trying to find some momentum despite a 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth recently. Ten Hag’s side sit three points above Liverpool through six league games as Klopp’s side have won just twice.

It comes after a season in which Liverpool came agonisingly close to a historic quadruple, losing out in the Premier League and Champions League by small margins. Despite Liverpool’s overall good form in Europe having reached three of the last five Champions League finals, Schmeichel joked that United’s recent win over the Reds is proof Klopp’s side are now just a “very good domestic team”.

“Manchester United have picked up again,” said Schmeichel. “I know they aren’t in the Champions League and we had a terrible start to the season.

“But our third game was against shall we call it a very good domestic team, who won two cups last year. They came to Old Trafford as big favourites, but we beat them.

“We played Arsenal as well, that was a big test because they won five games on the trot and we beat them. What I like about this Man United team is that they are fighting, running for lost causes and this guy Rashford has been tremendous.

“I am just so sad we aren’t in the Champions League because we are missing out on so much entertainment.” Liverpool are back in Champions League action this evening when they take on Napoli.

Thiago Alcantara is in contention to make his first appearance for Liverpool since suffering an injury against Fulham. Jordan Henderson, Fabio Carvalho, Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate, Calvin Ramsay, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all remain unavailable.
