Man Utd hero offers to be next Wrexham boss to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney
Welcome to Wrexham season 2 official trailer
A former Manchester United hero has sent a bizarre ‘come and get me plea’ to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as he looks for his next job in football management. Dwight Yorke won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup during a golden period for the Red Devils. The former Aston Villa forward formed a devasting strike partnership with Andy Cole, as Yorke found the net 65 times in 152 appearances for the Old Trafford club between 1998 and 2002.
Since retirement he has recently cut his teeth in the world of football management, taking charge of the Australian A-League side Macarthur FC in July 2022. Just three months later he led the club to its first-ever trophy, beating Sydney United 58 2-0 in the Australian Cup Final.
Yorke left his post with the ‘Bulls’ in January this year and has been out of football management ever since, but the former Trinidad & Tobago captain is plotting a return to the dugout and it seems that he isn’t overly concerned about whose feathers he ruffles in an effort to land a top job.
The 51-year-old has stated that he would consider the Wrexham manager’s job if owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney approached him about the role.
Speaking exclusively to OLBG, Yorke said: “I’m unemployed as a manager and I’m very passionate about trying to get back into the industry. If Wrexham approached me and asked me to manage the team, I’d consider it.
“I have to make a decision that aligns with my ideas and ambitions. If Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney matched my mindset, then it’s a good opportunity for me. There’s a lot of hype around the club and that’s understandable because of what the owners bring to the club.
“If the opportunity presents itself to me and have that initial conversation with the owners about our vision for the club, then it’s a serious and exciting gig. It’s a football job that you need to be your best at, not somewhere to have fun.”
Yorke’s surprise grab for the Wrexham job is somewhat baffling given that the club’s Hollywood owners are not actively seeking a new manager. The occupied position belongs to experienced lower league boss Phil Parkinson, who guided the Reg Dragons to the National League title last season with a record 111 points.

The landmark success earned the North Wales club automatic promotion back to the Football League for the first time in 15 years, further increasing Parkinson’s stock with the owners and supporters alike.
Wrexham have made an indifferent start to life in League Two however, winning just one of their first five matches and drawing three others. They were also eliminated from the League Cup on Tuesday evening after losing a penalty shoot-out to Bradford City following a 1-1 draw a the Racecourse Stadium.
Parkinson’s position is not under any initial threat, however, so Yorke will need to demonstrate plenty of patience and remarkable powers of persuasion if he is to get his desired meeting with Reynolds and McElhenney anytime soon.
