Man Utd hero Nemanja Vidic hails Harry Maguire as "confident and comfortable"

Manchester United hero Nemanja Vidic has given his honest opinion of Old Trafford skipper Harry Maguire – and it will be pleasing to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Serbian icon, who won five Premier League titles with the Red Devils, knows more than most about playing in the centre of defence – and Maguire can count him as a fan.

The former Hull and Leicester defender has gone from strength to strength in recent seasons, forcing his way into the starting XI for both United and England.

While playing his key role for the Three Lions after an injury kept him out of the opening two fixtures, Vidic has given his thoughts on Maguire's recent outings.

He wrote for The Athletic : "Harry Maguire looks confident and comfortable, even more for his country than for Manchester United.

"He's a defender who is still improving, but if he wants to be recognised at the highest level he has to win trophies. When I look at Maguire I see a defender who is good at everything, 8/10 at everything.

"He's not as good on the ball or as fast as Rio Ferdinand was for example, and he doesn't tackle or head like I did, but he has quality across his game.

"He's fast enough, he's strong enough, he can jump and play the ball, his positioning is fine."

Maguire spoke to the media this week and they asked about his red card in the first-half of the Nations League clash against Denmark last October.

He said: “Yeah, I have great support around me. Great family, great friends and a great club as well who have helped me along the way.

“I look back and obviously it was a challenging time. I think every international player has been through ups and downs in their career. That’s part and parcel of being a footballer.

"It was a challenging time but I’m proud of the way that I handled it and the way I’ve come through it.

“Now I’m in a positive place and everything’s good at the moment and long may it continue.

“I wouldn’t say it’s extra motivation because of that [defeat],” he continued. “I think the motivation is there: it’s the semi-final of a European Championship.

“The semi-final loss at the World Cup hurt a lot so when it comes on Wednesday night we need to make sure we get a positive feeling, rather than the one that we got against Croatia [in 2018].”
